Monthly meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday at the Erlanger Depot Museum on Crescent Avenue at 7:00 PM. All are welcome to attend.

Newsletter Covers: 1999 in Review

February we sponsored Angus Augustus Burleigh for Chautauqua at the Erlanger Library.  Angus went from slavery to the army to graduating college.  Actor Hason Davis portrayed Burleigh and gave a captivating performance of this unique man with challenges given to few African Americans in the 1800’s.

Jack Scheben researched a copy of the original 220 lots purchased and laid out by the Erlanger Syndicate Subdivision.  The record was found at the Kenton County Records Department.  The Society has laminated and framed the copy for the museum.

A CD of the 1850 Kentucky Census was purchased for research purposes.  The Depot remains open each Saturday from 12:00pm until 4:00pm and society members come to file, sort and change displays.  Please feel free to stop by and view or help on any Saturday between April 1st and November 1st.

Fund Raiser

The project for 1999 was to contract with a company to make an Erlanger Coverlet.  This was a very successful project for the organization.

The coverlet turned out very nice.  If you have not seen one let us know and we will send you a brochure.  Eleven Erlanger landmarks are displayed on the coverlet.

Community Participation!

Mr. Don Thomas shared a 1920-1930 scrapbook of Katherine Martin, daughter of Dr. Keeney.  Mr. Thomas also put on loan to the museum a copper coin with a hole in the center.  This was found on his property on Forest Avenue.  The coin was worn as a necklace by Confederate sympathizers in the 1860’s.

Improvements

As the time was getting close for the annual Heritage Day we tried to think of one improvement that we could afford for the Depot or Park.  Our decision was to construct an outside restroom behind the Depot.  This was accomplished and has been an added convenience for folks who have their weddings at the gazebo and families who have their reunions in the park.  Florence Nursery also spruced up the shrubbery around the Depot.  Repeated vandalism to the existing lighting has become a safety hazard so we installed break resistant sensor lights.

TV Stars

Mary McClure and Paul Hahn appeared on the Northern Kentucky Magazine Cable TV program staring Dick VonHoene, promoting Heritage Day.  Articles appeared in the Dixie News and Erlanger Recorder about the coverlet and the annual Heritage Day.  This was nice publicity for our Society and our Friendship City.  We had beautiful weather, camaraderie, craft booths and Pioneer Annie.  She once again showed our visitors how to churn butter, make candles, iron clothes and the favorite of the children, making cornhusk dolls.  We had a great day and made lots of money selling tee shirts, note cards, magazines and coverlets.  About 500 people toured the museum and signed our museum register and shared stories about their days in Erlanger.  We hope you will join us on September 17, 2024 for this year’s Heritage Day!

 Our Walking Tour Brochure was a great hit.  We used them on the horse drawn carriage ride for Heritage Day and donated several to the Senior Citizen groups in the community.  Brochures are always available at the museum.  They were instrumental in spearheading the successful $10,000 grant received from the Kentucky Heritage League.  Thank you to Mary Egan for completing the grant form.  This grant was used to catalog properties in the historical core area.

Donated to the Society

The Hartman Road sign.  Hartman Road was renamed Houston Road so the sign was removed.  Fred and Betty Black presented a family history of the Hartman Family.   Betty’s maiden name was Hartman.  The family owned the dairy in Erlanger called Sunset Dairy.  The photo’s and narration was a joy to hear and see.  The Domaschko Family History was donated to the Society and Kersting Family Photos were also presented.  A bank book from 1933 to 1937 from the town of Erlanger Water Improvement Fund. A Parking Meter used in Erlanger and made by Michael Art Bronze Company was donated to the Museum.

Residents have been very generous to the Society.  If you would like to donate or loan a prized family possession to the Erlanger Historical Society, please call Pat Hahn at 727-8959 and we will arrange to pick it up or to meet you at the museum if you cannot come by on Saturday from 12:00pm until 4:00pm.
